With our head, in our theology, we know God never leaves us and we are never alone, but in our humanness, the emotion of loneliness can overtake us. Jesus, too, felt human emotions. At a minimum, we see Jesus lonely in the Garden of Gethsemane as his friends abandon him in prayer, and then forsaken on Calvary as he cries out in Matthew 27:46. And Isaiah 53:3 prophetically describes Jesus as "a man of sorrow and acquainted with grief." But Hebrews 4:15-16 reminds us that we have a savior who is able to sympathize with us, even in loneliness, and provide help in time of need. Sadness, frustration and anger are emotions not often embraced as inevitable parts of life—or of our spiritual journey. What do you do when you find yourself in a season of lament? There is good news that most of us know but few choose to embrace: lament is a necessary and healthy spiritual condition, an exercise of faith that can lead to eventual joy and peace that words fail to capture. Lament. This long expression of deep pain or sorrow isn't a sign of a *lack* of faith or spiritual weakness. It's a soul-strengthening exercise.
